Best of Nepal City Tour Itinerary
Welcome to Nepal! After crossing the India–Nepal border at Sunauli, your group coordinator will help with the immigration process and introduce you to your friendly driver-guide. Sit back and enjoy a comfortable drive to Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel and take some time to refresh. In the afternoon, begin your first exploration of Nepal’s spiritual side at the Lumbini Sacred Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Maya Devi Temple, marking the exact spot where Buddha was born, and see the Ashoka Pillar, built in 249 BC to honor this sacred place.
Take a peaceful walk around the Sacred Pond and visit the nearby monasteries built by countries like Thailand, Korea, and China, each reflecting their own Buddhist culture and design.
End your day with a quiet moment at the World Peace Pagoda, watching the sunset over the plains of Lumbini. It’s a calm and meaningful start to your journey through Nepal.
Begin your morning with a peaceful visit to Lumbini’s monastic zone. Watch monks chant and meditate as the first light of day touches the sacred gardens, an experience that captures the calm spirit of this holy site.
After breakfast, start your scenic drive toward Pokhara, Nepal’s adventure capital. The journey covers around 200 kilometers and takes 7 to 8 hours, passing through Butwal, Palpa (Tansen), and Syangja. Along the way, enjoy views of terraced farmlands, small towns, and forested hills. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant to taste authentic Nepali food.
As you drive, you’ll cross the Tinau and Kali Gandaki rivers and see glimpses of village life, farmers working in the fields, schoolchildren walking along the roadside, and local markets full of fresh produce.
Arrive in Pokhara by evening and check into your lakeside hotel. Take a relaxing stroll along Phewa Lake or enjoy tea or coffee at one of the cafés overlooking the water. It’s a peaceful way to end your day before the adventures ahead.
Start before dawn with a drive to Sarangkot viewpoint (1,592 meters) to witness one of the world’s most spectacular sunrises. Watch as the first rays illuminate the Annapurna massif, including Annapurna I (8,091m), Dhaulagiri (8,167m), and the distinctive pyramid-shaped Machapuchare or “Fishtail” peak (6,993m). The panoramic view spans over 200 kilometers of the Himalayan range on clear days.
Return to Pokhara for breakfast, then begin your comprehensive city tour. Take a colorful wooden boat across Phewa Lake to visit Tal Barahi Temple, a two-story pagoda dedicated to the Hindu goddess Barahi. The temple sits on a small island and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains reflected in the lake’s calm waters.
Explore the mysterious Gupteshwor Cave, a limestone cave system stretching over 3 kilometers underground. The cave houses several Hindu shrines and features impressive stalactite formations. Adjacent to the cave, visit Devi’s Fall (Patale Chhango), where the Pardi Khola stream disappears into an underground tunnel, creating a powerful waterfall during monsoon season.
Visit the World Peace Pagoda, built by Japanese Buddhist monks and offering 360-degree views of Pokhara valley, Phewa Lake, and the Annapurna range. The white stupa stands as a symbol of peace and provides excellent photography opportunities.
Adventure enthusiasts in your group can choose from optional activities like paragliding over Pokhara valley (20-30 minutes of flight time), zip-lining across gorges (1.8 kilometers of cable), or white water rafting on the Seti River (2-3 hours of rapids).
Spend your evening exploring Lakeside’s vibrant streets filled with restaurants, shops selling trekking gear, and cultural performances showcasing traditional Nepali music and dance.
On this day, we depart Pokhara after breakfast and head toward Kathmandu, stopping at Manakamana Temple along the way. The scenic drive follows the Prithvi Highway alongside the Marsyangdi and Trishuli rivers, passing terraced hills and traditional villages.
At Kurintar, board Nepal’s first cable car for a 10-minute ride up to Manakamana Temple (1,302 m). The 2.8-kilometer cable car ride offers stunning aerial views of the Trishuli River valley and surrounding hills.
Manakamana Temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagwati, known as the “wish-fulfilling goddess.” Join in traditional prayers or observe pilgrims offering flowers, incense, and other rituals, a practice followed for centuries.
After the temple visit, continue your drive to Kathmandu. The 4-hour journey goes through the Trishuli Valley before going up into the Kathmandu Valley, showing a slow change from quiet rural areas to the busy city.
Arrive in Kathmandu by evening and check into your hotel in Thamel, the city’s tourist hub. Stroll through lively streets filled with restaurants, shops, and local culture—a vibrant introduction to Nepal’s capital.
This day is dedicated to exploring Kathmandu’s rich culture and heritage. Start at Swayambhunath Stupa, also called the “Monkey Temple” for the hundreds of monkeys around the hilltop forest. Climb 365 stone steps to reach the stupa, which sits 77 meters above the valley. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of Kathmandu and nearby mountains. Explore the shrines, prayer wheels, and smaller stupas while admiring the golden spire with Buddha’s all-seeing eyes.
Next, visit Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu site, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the banks of the Bagmati River, it’s the main cremation site for Hindus in Nepal. The temple’s pagoda-style architecture and spiritual significance make it a powerful glimpse into Hindu traditions.
Conclude the day at Boudhanath Stupa, one of the world’s largest Buddhist stupas and a center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Walk clockwise around the stupa, spin prayer wheels, and see monks and devotees performing daily rituals. The surrounding area features Tibetan monasteries, shops, and rooftop cafés offering great views of the stupa.
This tour highlights Kathmandu’s religious diversity, architectural beauty, and centuries-old cultural traditions in an accessible and engaging way.
After breakfast, depart Kathmandu for Chitwan National Park, driving through the scenic middle hills and the Trishuli River valley. The drive of about 150 kilometers usually takes 5–6 hours, taking you from the cool Kathmandu Valley down to the subtropical lowlands of the Terai region.
Along the way, pass traditional Newari towns, terraced farms, and eventually the flat plains of southern Nepal. Stop for lunch at Mugling, a riverside spot with views of the Trishuli River and surrounding forests.
As you approach Chitwan, the landscape changes to dense sal forests, grasslands, and wetlands, home to Nepal’s rich wildlife. Cross rivers like the Narayani, which marks the western edge of the park.
Arrive in Sauraha, the main gateway to Chitwan National Park, and check into your jungle lodge or resort, designed to blend with the forest surroundings.
Begin your jungle adventure with a calm canoe ride on the Rapti River, spotting crocodiles, kingfishers, herons, and storks. Then take a guided walk through Tharu villages, see traditional stilted houses, observe daily farming and handicraft activities, and enjoy Tharu music, dance, and folklore that reflect their close connection to nature.
Start early, before sunrise, with either an elephant safari or a jeep safari, when animals are most active in the cool morning. Both options offer a great chance to spot Chitwan’s famous one-horned rhinoceros, now numbering over 600 in the park.
The elephant safari takes you quietly through dense grasslands and forests along ancient animal trails. Your experienced mahout (elephant driver) guides the ride safely, bringing you closer to wildlife in areas that vehicles cannot reach.
The jeep safari covers more ground across different habitats—riverine forests, grasslands, and wetlands. Your naturalist guide points out animal tracks and behaviors while helping spot Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and over 540 bird species.
Visit the Elephant Breeding Center to learn about conservation efforts and see baby elephants with their mothers. The center educates visitors about elephant care and supports anti-poaching and tourism initiatives.
Take a guided jungle walk with naturalists who explain medicinal plants, animal tracks, and bird calls, highlighting Chitwan’s complex ecosystem and conservation programs that benefit local communities.
Spend time birdwatching along wetlands and rivers, with chances to see Bengal floricans, hornbills, peacocks, and migratory waterfowl.
End the day with a sunset over the Rapti River, reflecting on your wildlife encounters and the importance of protecting these unique habitats.
After breakfast, depart Chitwan for the India–Nepal border at Sunauli. The drive of about 150 km usually takes 4–5 hours, passing through the flat Terai plains, traditional villages, farms, and small market towns that showcase rural Nepali life.
Stop for lunch at a local restaurant and enjoy a Nepali thali or international dishes. Take this time to shop for last-minute souvenirs, exchange any remaining rupees, and organize your belongings for border crossing.
Arrive at Sunauli in the afternoon with ample time to complete immigration and customs formalities. Your guide assists throughout the process to ensure a smooth and comfortable departure.
Explore the border town for final shopping, handicrafts, tea, and spices are available at duty-free prices. Throughout the journey, your safety and satisfaction are our priority, making your last day in Nepal relaxed and hassle-free.
